Our new initiative aims to establish a post-use monitoring center, a critical resource to support individuals after substance use, reduce overdose fatalities, and improve overall public health.About Olivia MaisonMy name is Olivia Maison, and I am the founder of the Bluegrass Harm Reduction Alliance. As a Black woman, a person with a disability, and a former foster child, my life has been marked by unique challenges and resilience. Today, I am a passionate advocate for harm reduction. My journey has not been easy. As a former sex worker and substance user, I have experienced firsthand the stigma and dangers associated with drug use. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the vital need for compassionate, evidence-based support systems for those struggling with substance use. Through recovery and perseverance, I have dedicated my life to ensuring that others in similar situations receive the help they need. Why a Post-Use Monitoring Center?Lexington, like many communities across the nation, is grappling with the devastating impact of the opioid crisis. According to the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy, in 2020 alone, there were 1,964 overdose deaths in Kentucky, a 49% increase from the previous year【source】. Our community urgently needs innovative solutions to combat this crisis.A post-use monitoring center provides a safe space where individuals can be observed by medical professionals after drug use, significantly reducing the risk of fatal overdoses. Such centers have been proven to save lives.
