In Chatham County, NC, approximately 3% of school children each year are identified as experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, qualifying for the McKinney-Vento Federal Program for these students. &nbsp;And even more students present to Chatham County school Social Worker&rsquo;s needs assessments would referred to as &ldquo;in need&rdquo; children. &ldquo;In need&rdquo; might include a buying new or replacement glasses when the family resources are not available, a social worker &ldquo;running out&rdquo; to buy food for a family without money or a way to access the Food Bank during its open hours, &nbsp;or where a parent&rsquo;s unexpected job loss puts the family on the edge of eviction. Currently formed by four Chatham County churches through a partnership with The North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, Care For Kids works hand-in-hand with Chatham County Schools&rsquo; system Social Workers and McKinney Vento Coordinator to offer direct, immediate help&hellip;.. whether it&rsquo;s a gas card to keep a family mobile, clean clothes for school, a mattress and bed covers at a temporary &ldquo;home&rdquo; or covering the cost of a hotel for a night of safety -- or simply helping to supply the schools&rsquo; McKinney Vento school trailer with needed items. &nbsp;The goal is to act in concert with the service community and fill the gaps, meeting urgent and often invisible needs with compassion and speed. This is a community issue, and it calls for a community response. Your gift to Care For Kids allows us to respond quickly and with dignity, helping families navigate moments of crisis with care.
