The Corporate Equity &amp; Inclusion Roundtable (CEIR) emerged, like many transformative movements, from an urgent need to confront a stark reality. In 2010, the Pittsburgh region ranked 40th out of 40 metropolitan areas nationwide in the conditions experienced by the Black working poor and Black children. This ranking was unacceptable. In response, community leaders met with Rich Fitzgerald during his campaign for Allegheny County Chief Executive. They asked him to help convene and host a new regional effort focused on corporate equity, economic access, and inclusion. He agreed, then reaffirmed his commitment once elected. Over the years, both County Executive Fitzgerald and Mayor Bill Peduto have stood with CEIR at its summits, signaling the importance of this shared work. CEIR&rsquo;s mission is straightforward: identify and amplify the entities in our region, corporations, companies, nonprofits, universities, and colleges that are actively advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. At the June 20, 2016, conference, we framed the challenge clearly: How do we create those pebbles of possibilities? How do we expand them? Duplicate them? Emulate them? Grow them across the region? CEIR is the space where those questions become action. The foundation of CEIR is built on two commitments: The Revised Rooney Rule and The Hybrid Rooney Rule. The Revised Rooney Rule requires that every job opening from entry level to the C-suite include at least one African American, Hispanic, or other person of color in the candidate pool. It does not guarantee outcomes; it ensures access. It guarantees that people of color are in the mix. The Hybrid Rooney Rule extends the same principle to contracting: before any contract is awarded, an African American, Hispanic, or other person of color must be considered.The philosophy behind CEIR is simple but powerful. If organizations across the region adopt these two practices consistently, not once, but continuously, we will change economic outcomes over time. When someone unemployed begins earning a paycheck, that is wealth building. When a minority-owned company wins work and grows, that is wealth building. When opportunity becomes accessible by design rather than by exception, the whole region moves forward. CEIR exists to make those possibilities real, replicable, and sustainable&mdash;for today&rsquo;s workforce, for tomorrow&rsquo;s leaders, and for the long-term equity of the Pittsburgh region.
