Compass Connections of Maine is a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of adults with intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and neurodivergent individuals by creating opportunities for connection, independence, participation, and meaningful inclusion in their communities.Our first initiative, the Compass Connections Community Access Initiative, addresses a barrier that is easy to overlook but profoundly affects quality of life: transportation. We are seeking funding to acquire our first wheelchair-accessible vehicle and establish a community transportation program that will help adults with disabilities participate in the ordinary experiences that many of us take for granted. Our ultimate vision is a sustainable statewide network of wheelchair-accessible vehicles throughout Maine. The goal is for more accessible transportation to exist and be available to this underserved population of individuals who need it, particularly in communities where options are limited.Having access to opportunities like going to the movies, going to the ocean, going to a state park or gathering with friends, for most people these activities bring no barriers. For someone who depends upon accessible transportation, this barrier is real.&nbsp;Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities deserve more than a place to live. They deserve friendship, adventure, independence, community, and the opportunity to experience the beauty and richness of Maine. A wheelchair-accessible vehicle is more than transportation. It is a bridge between an individual and the community around them. It can create friendships, memories, independence, and belonging. We invite you to invest in a vision where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not simply cared for within their communities, they are active participants in them.
