It requires actively investing in people, communities, and opportunities that have been denied to them. At CSAW, we work toward racial justice by supporting performing and circus artists of color. We use our place within the circus and performing arts community to help address the systemic racism that has shaped who gets opportunities, who gets supported, and whose stories are valued. The Western circus tradition has a long history of racial exploitation and appropriation, and the effects of that history are still felt today. While there have been meaningful efforts toward greater representation and inclusion, artists of color continue to face barriers to education, professional opportunities, funding, and community.Our work is about changing that. Through grants, community building, and career development programs, CSAW provides tangible support to circus and performing artists of color. We believe that creating a more equitable world means putting resources directly into the hands of the people most affected by inequity and creating opportunities for them to build sustainable careers and communities.
