Join Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read (or Mark?? They’re figuring it out…) as they navigate stolen ships, storms, mutiny, and most challenging of all, the wild desires of their adventurous queer hearts. Check out the sizzle reel from our 2025 Staged Reading HERE ! WHAT IS THIS CAMPAIGN? Forager Theatre Company will be mounting the VERY FIRST staged workshop production of this musical in March 2027. It will feature a live six-piece band, full costumes and set, swordfighting, original choreography, and all those sweet sea shanties! After multiple years of development, readings, concerts, and workshops, this ship is ready to set sail on the open seas! And as an independent nonprofit dedicated to original stories, we would like YOU to become a shipmate and help us raise the booty for this endeavor. WHY HARD TACK?Pirates have always been the ultimate symbol of freedom, adventure, and rebellion against rigid societal rules. So, it’s no surprise that same-sex relationships, intimate partnerships, cross-dressing, and gender fluidity were documented parts of life during the Golden Age of Piracy. Hard Tack: A Pirate’s Guide to Polyamory is a celebration of how queer people have always existed and brings it one step further by showcasing alternative relationship models like polyamory. WHY NOW?As the fight for queer representation and visibility remains as urgent as ever, Forager believes that original stories depicting honest, humorous, flawed queer people deserve a platform to be realized. Commercial theatre may be filling up with film adaptations, recognizable IP, and celebrity stunt casting, but the whole industry only thrives when new works with bold ideas are uplifted and carry us into the next generation. And in a time when the restrictions of identity labels are being broken apart, we know that Hard Tack can open the minds of people, wholesomely challenge preconceptions, and be a positive catalyst for change. WHY FORAGER THEATRE COMPANY?Forager Theatre Company is an independent nonprofit that believes “art starts with what you have.” For five years, we’ve used the objects, spaces, viewpoints, contributions, and people around us to create education programs, workshops, readings, experiences, concerts, and full-scale productions. For Hard Tack, we’ve already started foraging for materials to build our ship of a show (physical and metaphorical!), but will also keep foraging from the experiences of our community of queer, trans, neurodivergent, disabled, body-diverse, and unique humans to enrich this wonderful story.Learn more about here: www.foragertheatre.com MEET THE CREWOur writing and creative team is made up of exceptional artists who have decades of experience creating original works in New York City and beyond – each member dedicated to making thrilling, accessible, adventurous theatre.
