The Longfellow Destination Imagination (DI) team of 3rd and 4th graders is going to globals! DI is a student-led STEAM based problem solving, creativity program where teams compete in two areas. For the main challenge, the Longfellow students chose the technical challenge and created a giant pinball machine (pinball is a soccer ball). The students built a ramp and pulley which leads the ball into a large box with a hole which triggers a circuit to turn on a light and make a sound. In instant challenge, students enter knowing nothing about the problem, are given a problem, given 4-5 minutes to prepare a solution, before presenting the solution to judges. The problems can be building a tower or bridge with given materials, or to create performance based on a given situation.  The Longfellow team completed at regionals where they qualified to go to state in Denver on April 6. They placed 3rd out of 21 teams, which has earned them a spot to attend Globals in Kansas City May 22-25. The students are so excited to attend this once in a lifetime opportunity! It's the world's biggest celebration of creativity and an opportunity for them to interact with kids from all over the country and world. Over 30 countries will be in attendance. It's a huge accomplishment that they were able to make it this far, and we don't want cost to be a barrier for kids to attend.  There is a significant registration fee for each team, as well as travel and lodging expenses. Any contribution is greatly appreciated!
