On January 14, 2026, we lost Devin &mdash; a quiet, sweet-souled, &nbsp;deeply caring young man who carried more than the world could see. He was 23 years old. Six feet tall with a smile that could light up a room and a heart even bigger than his frame. He was loved beyond measure. And like so many young men his age, he struggled in silence &mdash; battles with mental health and addiction that too many young men face alone, without resources, without community, and without hope.&nbsp; Around the age of 17 or 18, something shifted. Untreated mental illness began to take hold &mdash; and without the right support, Devin, like so many young men his age, turned to substances to cope. His family saw it. His family fought for him. But the system they turned to for help told them something no parent should ever have to hear:&quot;He&#39;s an adult. There&#39;s nothing you can do.&quot; Here is the truth that Devin&#39;s story exposed:Under Minnesota law &mdash; Statute 253B &mdash; a parent&#39;s legal authority to advocate for their child&#39;s mental health treatment ends the moment that child turns 18. Not when their brain is fully developed. Not when they are stable. Not when they are safe. At 18. Period.For middle and low-income families in Saint Paul, private dual-diagnosis treatment centers are simply out of reach financially. And when the state system fails &mdash; and it failed Devin &mdash; families are left with no options, no pathways, and no power to save their own child.Devin did not fall through the cracks. He was pushed through them by a system that was never designed to catch him.&nbsp; Devin&#39;s Reach exists to make sure this never happens to another family &mdash; and from a mother&#39;s love that refuses to let his story end there.We are building a nonprofit and advocacy organization dedicated to:💙 Mental Health &amp; Substance Addiction Outreach - Connecting young men ages 18&ndash;25 to real resources &mdash; counseling referrals, addiction recovery support, crisis hotlines, and community programs designed for young men who are struggling in silence⚖️ Reforming Minnesota Statute 253B - Fighting to update civil commitment criteria to reflect the brain development and vulnerability of emerging adults ages 18&ndash;25 &mdash; so parents have a legal pathway to get their child help before tragedy strikes🛡️ Parental Intervention Rights - Championing new legislation that allows parents to petition for intensive treatment for an adult child in crisis &mdash; without requiring proof of &quot;imminent danger&quot; as the only trigger for intervention🌱 Building Devin&#39;s Legacy - Keeping Devin&#39;s story alive through community events, partnerships with schools, churches, and advocacy organizations &mdash; growing a movement in Saint Paul that says no parent should be left powerless, and no young man should be left to fight alone. On May 23, 2026 &mdash; what would have been Devin&#39;s 24th birthday &mdash; we are hosting a BBQ in Saint Paul. Food. Music. Games. Mental health and addiction recovery resources. No barriers.
