One of the programs we have been operating since 2017 is our Lansing Mobile Farmers Market. Many of the neighborhoods that we serve are void of a full-service grocery store. These neighborhoods also have higher rates of health disparities, such as Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity, and Infant Mortality. Part of our mission has been to help these residents to have increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables that could go with the boxes of canned, boxed, and packaged food that they receive from a food pantry. Fresh fruits and vegetables are needed to help our residents to improve their overall health. We are seeking corporate and private donations to raise $100,000 to purchase a new Mobile Farmers Market truck. We have a matching $50,000 grant. The new truck is actually designed to take and sell fresh produce into neighborhoods where the items are pre-loaded on the truck and when we arrive, we just have to open the side door panel of the truck and slide out the shelving unit that contain all of the produce for people to shop. Our old “used” truck has in operation since 2017 and has allowed us to serve over 4,000 individuals. However, the current “used” truck only allows up to load and haul items to each stop. Team members spend a lot of time setting up and tearing down our mobile farmers market truck up to six times each day for two days per week from July through the first week in October. The new Mobile Farmers Market truck is larger and built as a mobile farmers market that also includes cold storage, additional storage for more produce, and a small sink. When we are done at a site, we just need to pack up our pop-up tent, check-out table and chairs and load them onto the truck. We anticipate being able to serve many more residents with this new mobile farmers market truck.
