When Cooper arrived at PMHS-CV on June 16, our hearts sank. A local police department brought us a tiny stray dog we named Cooper. From the moment he walked through our doors, it was clear he was suffering. Cooper was covered from head to toe in thick, painful mats. He smelled strongly, struggled to walk, and couldn&#39;t even see. His fur had grown completely over his eyes, causing him to bump into walls as he tried to move around. With the help of the police department, our staff contacted Cooper&#39;s owners. Through several open, honest, and compassionate conversations, they agreed to let us examine Cooper and provide temporary medical treatment while we assessed the extent of his condition. It took our veterinary team more than four hours to carefully shave Cooper&#39;s 20-pound body. His mats were so thick, dense, and severely overgrown that they completely covered both of his eyes, leaving him unable to see. By the time they finished, they had removed more than two pounds of painfully matted fur. Hidden beneath those mats was just as bad. Cooper&#39;s skin was severely infected, with painful hot spots covering his body. He had double ear infections, dangerously overgrown nails, and severe eye infections that had already left him blind in one eye and with very limited vision in the other. Every step he took was painful. Our staff had several difficult but compassionate conversations with his elderly owners. We understood these conversations weren&#39;t easy. It was clear they cared about Cooper, but it was also clear that his medical needs had become far greater than they could manage. We explained the lifelong care he would require and the pain he had been living with for so long. After much thought and many heartfelt discussions, they made an incredibly difficult decision. They chose to give Cooper the chance they could no longer provide by surrendering him into our care. Once Cooper became ours, he went directly into a loving foster home to begin healing. The first few days weren&#39;t easy. He was frightened by all the changes around him. He barely ate, avoided people, and seemed unsure if he could trust anyone. After spending so much of his life uncomfortable and in pain, he didn&#39;t know what it felt like to be safe. &nbsp;But healing has a remarkable way of revealing who an animal truly is. Little by little, Cooper&#39;s personality began to emerge. The biggest surprise came from his eyes. When Cooper first arrived, our medical team believed both eyes would likely need to be removed. Thankfully, with weeks of dedicated treatment and around-the-clock care, his condition improved dramatically. While Cooper will remain visually impaired, his eyes are now comfortable and pain-free, a result we once weren&#39;t sure was possible. Today, Cooper is thriving in foster care.
