Black Girl Joy is a Michigan nonprofit creating spaces where Black women can connect, breathe, move, heal, rest, and experience joy in community. We believe joy is more than a moment. It is part of wellness. Our work centers the mental, spiritual, physical, and social wellbeing of Black women through culturally affirming experiences that help reduce stress, isolation, and burnout while strengthening connection and belonging. What Black Girl Joy Looks LikeThroughout the year, we create opportunities for connection and wellness through:

Self Care Saturdays focused on emotional wellness, grief, healing, and personal growth

fitness challenges, movement, and strength building

hiking, nature walks, beach days, and other outdoor experiences

social gatherings intentionally created for laughter, connection, and joy

workshops and conversations about mental health, stress, anxiety, burnout, loss, and life transitions

opportunities for Black women to build genuine relationships and a stronger sense of belonging

new experiences that encourage women to step outside of their routines, try something different, and make room for themselves

Some gatherings are reflective. Some get us moving. Some help women have difficult conversations. And some exist simply because Black women deserve opportunities to have fun.Together, they create something many women are missing: community. Why This Work MattersBlack women continue to experience significant disparities in physical and mental health while carrying the effects of chronic stress, discrimination, caregiving responsibilities, workplace pressures, financial strain, family responsibilities, and social isolation. The numbers tell part of that story. In 2023, Black women in the United States experienced 50.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, compared with 14.5 among white women. In Michigan, Black infants were nearly three times as likely to die before their first birthday as white infants in 2023: 11.9 deaths per 1,000 live births compared with 4.1.Approximately 59% of Black women age 20 and older are living with some form of cardiovascular disease.Black adults also remain less likely to receive mental health treatment, reinforcing the importance of culturally responsive support, education, connection, and access to resources. These disparities are not solved by community programming alone. But they reinforce why culturally affirming spaces for connection, movement, stress reduction, education, support, and belonging matter.Black women deserve places where wellness does not begin only after something has gone wrong.Creating Space for the Whole WomanBlack Girl Joy recognizes that wellness is interconnected.Sometimes wellness looks like hiking a trail.Sometimes it looks like sitting in a room and finally acknowledging grief that has never been given space.Sometimes it is moving your body.Sometimes it is meeting another woman who understands.Sometimes it is trying something you have never done before. And sometimes wellness looks like dressing up, laughing, dancing, and remembering that life can still feel good.We make room for all of it.What Your Gift Makes PossibleYour donation helps Black Girl Joy provide:

affordable and accessible wellness programming

culturally affirming facilitators and instructors

mental health education and resource connections

Self Care Saturday workshops

fitness and movement opportunities

outdoor and nature based experiences

community building and social events

books, journals, supplies, and reflection materials

park permits, meeting spaces, and event expenses

refreshments and participant materials

scholarships and reduced cost opportunities when funding allows

the behind the scenes coordination required to create welcoming, organized, and intentional experiences

Your support helps remove financial barriers so that more Black women can participate.Help Us Build a Village Where Joy BelongsBlack Girl Joy is building more than a calendar of events. We are building community. We are creating spaces where Black women can show up without having to perform, explain themselves, or carry everything alone.Spaces to move.Spaces to connect.Spaces to grieve.Spaces to grow.Spaces to rest. And spaces to experience joy simply because they deserve to.Your gift helps us keep making room.Thank you for investing in the wellbeing, connection, and joy of Black women across Michigan.Black Girl Joy's discussion circles and community wellness programs provide education, peer connection, and support.
