Imagine being forced to leave everything behind in an instant—your home, your cherished belongings, everything you hold dear. Picture yourself in an emergency shelter, empty-handed and vulnerable. Now, while grappling with the loss of your home, you must find a new place to live, secure a new job or maintain your current one as if nothing has changed, arrange reliable childcare, and somehow find the strength to heal. It's overwhelming, isn't it? Victims often face overwhelming financial barriers that make escaping their situations even harder. Prior to October 2024, Tri County Council received a grant from the federal government that allowed us to provide financial assistance to overcome these barriers. With the previously mentioned funding cuts, we had to eliminate those funds.  What do some of these needs and barriers look like? <ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Past-due bills: Utility bills that are past due often prevent someone from renting an apartment. Sadly, abusers sometimes use this as a tactic to keep their victims trapped. Or the past due status is a result of financial abuse. </li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Car repairs/transportation: For some, car repairs are the difference between escaping or staying. We’ve seen situations where an abuser convinces a victim to return/stay by offering free repairs, keeping them in the cycle of abuse.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Security cameras: Security cameras can offer peace of mind, act as a deterrent, or provide evidence of abuse.</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Personal hygiene/food/clothing: Starting over is financially draining. Many leave with nothing. After securing housing, funds can be exhausted, and while we do provide other community resources, sometimes help is urgently needed. Giving a client a small gift card to pick up groceries, school supplies, and clothing helps. </li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Phone: Many of our clients come to TCC needing a SAFE phone. Their phone is being tracked, paid for by the abuser, or was broken or taken away.
