The El Dorado County Canine Association is a non-profit tax exempt public charity recognized under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The association was created to help offset the costs associated with caring for and purchasing the El Dorado County Sheriff Department&rsquo;s canines. Deputy Sheriff canine handlers are responsible for the initial purchase cost of the canine. The department does not buy the canines in El Dorado County. The current cost for a canine is anywhere from $15,000-$20,000. On 7/31/26, we had two handlers purchase dogs that were $18,500 each. &nbsp;We anticipate purchasing another dog in the next month. The handlers also cover veterinary costs for the canine that do not pertain to on-duty injuries. The El Dorado County Sheriff&rsquo;s Office is only responsible for on-duty injuries for the K-9s.&nbsp;Additionally, when the time comes for one of our beloved canines to retire, the handler is then responsible for all monetary care of the canine, including all food, recreational equipment, and veterinary care. &nbsp;In this instance, the association provides lifetime monetary support towards medical costs of retired canines to allow them to enjoy retirement to the fullest. &nbsp; &nbsp; The El Dorado County Sheriff&rsquo;s Canine Unit is comprised of eight canine teams. &nbsp;Four canine teams are assigned to the patrol division (currently one vacant spot). These canine teams provide law enforcement services to all El Dorado County communities. &nbsp;All patrol canines are trained in the apprehension of dangerous suspects. Two canine teams are trained in narcotics detection, with one being assigned to an interdiction unit, and the other a DEA task force.
