Alabama Equality is a statewide organization committed to public education and advocacy for LGBTQ rights, especially in response to legislation aimed at undermining the safety and dignity of transgender individuals. Our primary focus is on protecting access to gender-affirming healthcare and challenging harmful policies that force transgender people into restrictive, dehumanizing situations, such as bathroom restrictions based on gender assigned at birth.

In recent years, proposed legislation has escalated attacks on the LGBTQ community, particularly targeting transgender individuals, fueled by misunderstanding and prejudice. Alabama Equality is here to provide advocacy training and host community gatherings to empower allies and community members to actively resist these harmful measures. Our members and supporters reflect Alabama’s rich diversity, encompassing people from every region, of various races, gender identities, and sexual orientations, united in the pursuit of equal rights.

Through our efforts, we aim to educate both the public and policymakers about the real impacts of this legislation on our lives. Such laws risk fostering environments where hate speech and hate crimes proliferate, putting LGBTQ individuals—especially transgender Alabamians—in even greater danger.

Alabama Equality is led by Co-Chairs Patricia Todd, Alabama's first openly gay elected official, and Shante Wolfe, a skilled political strategist known for her success in guiding impactful campaigns and expanding organizations. Together, we are committed to building a safer, more inclusive Alabama.
