Our organization is dedicated to serving veterans in our Rural Communities. Donors like you are vital to the continued success of our mission to assist our veterans during extenuating circumstances, and we are grateful for your support. In partnering with the Sauk County Veterans Service Office to serve veterans and their families, we have taken advantage of lessons learned and identified actions to change what is not working and potential solutions to improve the lives of those who served.Since 2019, our county has seen an increased need for services, health care, food, housing, and transportation unique to rural area veterans and families. Of a total of 469 homeless veterans, many had to be moved out of the county away from their community of support to be provided with stabilizing care. Among Veterans, a variety of experiences that some people have before, during, and after their military service may increase their risks of experiencing housing instability and homelessness. These may include poverty, unemployment, economic hardships, trauma, mental health conditions, substance use disorders, family or relationship conflicts, disruptions in connections to social support networks, social isolation, and incarceration. Currently, opioid use disorders, Military sexual trauma, intimate partner violence, and criminal justice system involvement are all still the common causes for homeless Veterans, while relationships, health conditions, and income top the reasons for homelessness in the Sauk County area. There have been significant federal investments in research and data collection to improve our understanding of Veterans experiencing homelessness and the impact of programs that serve them. The programs built for cities are lacking in rural communities, and the same investments don't trickle down to counties in Wisconsin to fund at the community level. Therefore, our Fund is a GAP filler and community-based to meet our local unfulfilled needs. Over the last two years, we have implemented Mental Health Assessments to assist veterans with filing VA Claims and gaining healthcare benefits they have earned. This program has successfully partnered with the Sauk County Veterans Service Office. Over this period, because of your generosity, we have assisted 181 veterans with Mental Health Assessments; of those, 84 now receive the VA benefits they earned. We can't wait to share more updates about our fund and the initiatives we hope to pursue. As we move forward, we have taken a series of bold steps, which we have long discussed, that we believe serve our communities and veterans. 1 . Veteran Emergency Beds: Provides short-term housing for veterans, gets them an assessment, and starts them into a program that best fits their needs. 2.    Veterans Transitional Housing: Housing for up to a 2-year transition period for treatment for both physical and mental health, Job Training, Financial Literacy, Family and Community Engagement, and Housing Placement 3. Veterans Permanent Housing: because not all of our veterans have family or a place they call home, we hope to start with 10 tiny homes for our most at-risk long-term veterans. 4.    Veterans Recovery Center: Help comes too late for many veterans and families. We have seen and felt this impact in our communities with VA hospital’s wait lists and veterans kicked out of local housing or denied housing for various reasons. With several Mental Health professionals at the Center, we look to help veterans and families during this crisis. 5.    Veterans Resource Community & Center: A common location where veterans and their families can come together to discuss needs and resources available to them through the Veterans Service Office or community volunteers.We know looking at our top five list can be overwhelming, and we know this will happen in phases, but we must start. We can't allow veterans to sleep in a tent or car and turn our heads. These men and women served this country and struggled with the unknown. These are five things to dream and make a reality of hope for our veterans! As our funding is limited and so many in our community have given generously to make a difference, we are asking for renewed and additional or sustaining donations from individuals and companies. We would be most grateful if you would consider donating to our organization.
