After more than 20 years of working directly with individuals and families facing homelessness, I have learned that the most effective solution is prevention. Once someone becomes homeless, navigating the systems designed to help them is often confusing, fragmented, and nearly impossible without advocacy and flexible funding. Small gaps in assistance regularly push people from temporary crisis into long-term homelessness.&nbsp; &nbsp; Our organization exists to close those gaps. Bridged Housing&nbsp;Many public programs offer short-term motel stays for people living on the streets, followed by rehousing assistance. However, even a brief transition gap of a few days can disqualify someone from further help. If a client pays for a motel room during that gap, they are no longer considered &ldquo;literally homeless&rdquo; and lose eligibility for rehousing support. When our nonprofit covers that short gap, the client remains eligible, the system can continue working, and they are able to secure housing with help for the deposit and first month&rsquo;s rent. Leveraged ArrearageWe also support long-term renters who experience temporary financial hardship. Many have lived in their homes for years and have landlords willing to work with them. Over time, however, late fees, legal notices, and processing costs accumulate, and by the time tenants seek help, the balance often exceeds what any single agency can cover.In one recent case, a renter faced more than $17,000 in rental debt. Instead of allowing displacement, we coordinated multiple funding sources, contributed direct assistance, and negotiated with the landlord&mdash;who ultimately forgave a significant portion of the balance. The renter began the new year housed and debt-free. Your donation allows us to use small, strategic amounts of funding to unlock larger resources, preserve housing stability, and prevent homelessness before it starts.
