La Societe des Quarante Hammes et Huit Chevaux ~  in English, The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses. More commonly known as the "Forty & Eight" - is an independent fraternal organization of U.S. veterans. Established in 1920 by members of the American Legion as a fun and honor society, the Forty & Eight's founders based the organization on their shared military experiences in WWI France. The boxcar of the French railways, which carried either 40 men (quarante hommes) or 8 horses (huit chevaux) to the front, is the symbol of the organization. Titles and functions are in French. The numerals "40/8" on a triangle of French horizon blue is the logo of The Forty & Eight. ~ OUR PURPOSE~ "For God and country we associate ourselves together for the following purposes: To create a charitable and non-profit veterans organization; to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to assist and promote the welfare and well-being of those who have served or are now serving in the Armed Forces of the United States and their widows, widowers and orphans; to participate in all memorial services for and to be present at the funerals of departed comrades; to take part in and encourage others to participate in the proper observance of all days honoring veterans; to preserve the memories of our Service in the Armed Forces of our Country; to actively participate within our membership in projects relating to (a) the welfare of the children of America; (b) the health of our Nation by fostering a nurses training program; and ( c) selected charitable endeavors."(Preamble to the 40/8 Constitution.) ~Voiture Locale 1154~Voiture Locale 1154 is the only 40&8 Locale in the Phoenix Area’s West Valley and has been actively involved in raising money to provide Nursing Scholarships to deserving students who have elected this profession and may juggle family, childcare, work, school, and studying. Preference is given to students connected to a veteran or first responder. Voiture 1154 Foundation is the official fundraising organization of the Voiture Locale 1154 of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux (Locale). The Foundation’s sole purpose is to raise funds for the programs executed by the Locale including but not limited to Child Welfare, Scholarships for Nurses training, Veterans Administration Voluntary Service (VAVS), and Americanism. The Foundation is a 501.c.3 non-profit public charity (EIN: 33-2624403).
