Middle and high school students from Youth on FIRE's Texas Youth & Government team have been invited to compete at the State Conference in Austin, Texas! These students competed at the District Conference on November 9th and did something that hadn't been done before-- they came in as a first-year delegation and SWEPT the awards in the middle school and high school Legislative Section!Having earned their spots at the State Conference, we are counting on you to help cover the costs for the program, transportation, and accommodations so that our teens can focus on their monumental task of preparing to compete against hundreds of delegates from all over the state.  Throughout their hard work over the past several months, these kids are truly honing the skills they'll need to make a difference in their own government: they have learned the process of how a bill becomes a law, researched current issues, written their own bills formatted to mirror those submitted to the Texas legislature, and mastered the art of debate following Parliamentary Procedure. At the conferences, they each act as state senators and representatives, presenting their own bills in committee hearings, fielding tough questions from their fellow delegates, engaging in  intense debate, and evening making and passing amendments before a vote determine's if their bill will survive to go through a similarly gruesome process in a Floor Hearing. With your help, our students will be empowered to continue on their journey at the State Conference, where they will have the privilege of competing in the State Capitol Building, debating one another's bills in the same place that our elected officials do.
