Give Detroit&#39;s Students, Single Moms, and Activists a Seat at the Table For ten years, the <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.culturaldesignmarathon.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Cultural Design Marathon</a> has taken the same design process engineers use to build bridges and airplanes and pointed it at the problems our communities actually carry. Ten years, 190+ participants, 27 community partners, and every single time the room fills with people who came in unsure if their problem even counted as a real problem, and left with a concept, a plan, and a group of people who will not let them go it alone. I have watched a single mom find the language to describe a childcare gap she&#39;d been carrying alone for years. I have watched a student realize the thing keeping them up at night was actually a design problem with a solvable structure. I have watched activists who&#39;ve been fighting the same fight for a decade walk out with a model instead of just a mission. The people who need this cohort most are often the people for whom $650 is the whole reason they don&#39;t apply. Not because they don&#39;t have a problem worth solving. Not because they wouldn&#39;t bring something real into the room. Because the fee sits between them and the work. This fundraiser exists to remove that. Every dollar raised goes toward free seats in the CDM 2026 Cohort for Detroit students, single moms, and activists, the people carrying the weight of this city&#39;s problems every day and rarely getting invited into a structured process to solve them.
