The week of November 12-18, the Junior League of Charleston, WV will be participating in the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI). What is LBDI, you ask? LBDI is a weeklong event where members wear the same Little Black Dress or outfit several times over the course of the week. By wearing the same LBD, our advocates hope to illustrate the restrictions poverty places on choices, opportunities, and access to resources. How does wearing the same LBD help people in our community facing poverty? Advocates wearing the same LBD will be taking donations from the community to help fund the Junior League of Charleston’s signature project, Backpack Buddies (BPB). What is Backpack Buddies? BPB provides nutrition packs for students in need each month. During the 2023-24 school year, 170 monthly nutrition packs will be provided to students at Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School (80), Grandview Elementary School (40), and McKinley Middle School (50). This project costs approximately $4,000 each year. Why is BPB needed in our community? Food security is a huge issue for West Virginia and Kanawha County. Over 67% of kids have an issue with food sufficiency in the state of West Virginia. In Kanawha county, 37% of children are on SNAP and over 22,000 students meet the requirements for free or reduced meals. Sixty percent of the student population at McKinley Middle School is economically disadvantaged. BPB helps feed these students over the weekend.
