Andrew is raising funds for SMART Family Literacy, so the organization can give books to babies, toddlers, and young children for their home libraries. Andrew is a huge fan of libraries, bookstores, and children's books. He volunteers for SMART Family Literacy, an organization that started more than 20 years ago, when his mom wanted to motivate him to read by hosting family reading parties, called SMART Parties, with popcorn and party accessories.  Andrew was born with Down's syndrome and spent time in UTMB's care as an infant, even undergoing heart surgery. He has always enjoyed the first Harry Potter book, "The Sorcerer's Stone," especially the first chapter, "The Boy Who Lived," because he was also the boy who lived and has a cool scar to prove it.   UTMB's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where 1,000 babies receive care each year, connects babies and their families to children's books from SMART in an important and meaningful way. The NICU Read-a-thon is a 10-day focused time when medical professionals and parents read with the babies, so the babies hear soothing and interesting voices. "It is a joy when you start reading and they recognize my voice and open their eyes." "I am very thankful to you for giving me this experience with my baby who is still here, you made me live a beautiful moment alongside her, thank you!"  SMART Family Literacy reaches 8,000 children directly and many more through partnerships and gives more than 30,000 children's books yearly in Galveston County, because hands-on access to books is critically important for early learning and lifelong success. SMART trains educators in childcare centers, reads in school classrooms, and provides SMART Family Literacy "Parties", which are reading parties that include nutrition education. At every SMART Party, families experience hands-on language-building science and art together and meet other families.
