WHO IS THIS FOR?This is for real ones that are really about supporting and co-creating with Color the Water. Our mission is to get as deep and radical as absolutely possible in every element of the philosophy and practice of surfing, and a life of resistance that is hopefully nourished by that. We are looking for people who want to do that same thing and more. Critical analysis, deep intention and decoloniality, resistance to the dilution of our mission into the existing status quo of surfing. People who want to support us not to get a seat at the table, but destroy the entire damn building that includes the room that houses the table so that we all can be free. This is not a place for people who just want free stuff or just wanna see more diversity in surfing to just see more people that look like you doing it. Surfing just "looking different" is not what we seek. We want fundamental change on systemic levels.  This is not for people who are looking for social or friend groups or to extract what they can from us until it's time to have a seat at surf's white supremacist table.  This is for those who go really hard on systemic oppression, who want to run surfing and CTW through as rigorous of a critical lens as possible, who believe in mutual aid and anti-capitalist forms of financial sustenance/barter systems, who value what we do and have honor and integrity, who want to commit to building genuine anti-racist community with us, and who believe in us as the ocean and coastal space that is unapologetic, abolitionist, and about praxis. WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?Money from this will go toward the operation of Color the Water. The breakdown of this by percentage is as follows, according to our most recent annual budget 35% Permanent Staff Salary35% CTW Internal Contracted Work (assistant instructors, photographers, childcare, on land support/services, etc.)5% Insurance10% Surf Equipment5% Media Equipment5% Catering5% Rent/Rent Related Fees *once this reaches a place of sustainability, there is a hope that a portion of this money can then transition into a collective pot that can serve in multiple ways. emergency relief, investment, collective endeavors, etc. WHAT'S IN THIS FOR ME?Well, what we hope first is that we can turn this "me" into "we," where we approach this more as a collective uplifting for those who seek radical change in surfing, community to do that with, and hope to contribute in meaningful lasting ways beyond just what they can get out of it as an individual. What we envision is that on both sides of this, all sides of this, we provide for each other. Color the Water has amassed a substantial amount of things for surfing, both tangible and non tangible. We want this to be a fluid contribution on both ends, where people's monthly amounts of contribution as well as CTW's resources are provided as available, and there is grace and understanding on both ends. That is why we have the smaller amount options, for those for whom money may not be available. That being said, we do hope that what we offer is worth more than $1 a month, and are also open to non-monetary contribution that can be to us or that can go to community collections. That being said, here are some things that we have come up with as part of a membership. They are intentionally not tiered by amount. - Indefinite Surfboard Sustenance- Surfboard repair support/lessons- Wetsuit Bounty- Surf Wisdom Sharing- Surf Media, Affirmation, and Analysis- Maker Spaces (silk screening, sewing, etc.)- Radical Thought Spaces (decolonized surf travel, gatherings, learning spaces, etc)- Opportunities to potentially invest in collective spaces and projects- Inner Circle Positionality (insight into CTW operation and philosophy, invitation into co-creation) *again though, please refrain from joining this mutual aid collective if the above mentioned benefits are the driving force or reason. WHY DO THIS NOW AFTER ALL THESE YEARS?This actually has been something that has been in our thoughts for many years. All I can say is that capitalism, the non profit industrial complex, and in some ways the white savior industrial complex had us holding back on the idea that we could ask our community to be a part of the support system that we ourselves are looking to provide. The time for this is long overdue, and with recent grants magically either not approved or turned in a minute late and not being accepted, the universe seems to have spoken. WHAT IF I ALREADY DONATED/ALREADY GET ALL THAT STUFF?Well, those are really good points on the surface, and we are hoping those who read this see it deeper than the stuff. We are trusting on an honor system that people will offer some combination of what they can and whatever Color the Water and our broader mission means to them. Many of you reading this already have boards and suits and all that, true. If that is all you need, this collective is probably not for you. (We will likely be steering more of those things towards this group with priority and intention in the future.) What we are hoping is that if you are seeking more than that... if you are seeking to do more than just get a seat at the table of surfing's white supremacist space, then this is a space to do so with courage and revolutionary praxis. If we are able to grow this to where we don't need foundational or corporate funds, we can be free to genuinely lean into creating an organizing space that could have a better chance at lending itself to the revolution than any of the current "diversify the waves" approach that keeps us oppressed, in a system designed for that very purpose.- Wealth redistribution. What we would love to do is continue to finesse funds from grantors and then use them in ways that disrupt the non profit industrial complex. With a collective sustaining CTW, we would have the chance to be really creative with how we do this.- Co-op style programming/projects. Admittedly, this is something we don't know enough about yet, but the idea of coming into spaces and initiatives together means a lot. This is something we have always wanted to do and in many ways are doing it informally, but in all honesty, there's been a lack of consistency or commitment that has kept us from really building.- LAND! What if we grew to a mass where we could pool our money and buy coastal land?!?!?! This is part of a bigger vision that we can dream toward, and we definitely will never close the land gap without collective resources. AND we would be able to do it in ways that would allow us to approach surf travel and land acquisition with decolonial critical analysis.- Surfboard design and enterprise. What would it look like if we started our own surfboard shaping space? Wetsuit design? Radicalized media and art projects? What else?- ___________ This is where you all come in. In your own lives, your work, and in our spaces, you’ve been down to take it further than the surface, and into having all these terms, many which are now diluted - anti-racism, equity, decolonization, abolition, liberation - be something continually genuine and deep. I am here for that, and here for you, and I thank you so much for offering your resources into this value driven idea. That being said, my commitment to you is to offer what I can to your surf journey as a source of healing and nourishment to continue and to deepen the struggle. The resources available to you all, and the resources you are hoping to offer, are something I would like to get more clarity on.
