He has been diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism, and surgery is the recommended treatment. This condition is caused by a nodule (95% are non-cancerous) that grows on a parathyroid gland, which alters the calcium levels in the body. The overproduction of calcium (hypercalcemia) causes many symptoms.  Calcium will continue to rise and symptoms will continue to get worse unless he is treated with surgery. If he does not get surgery, euthanasia will need to be considered since there is nothing else that can be done for him. We do not want him to get to the point of bladder stones, kidney stones, kidney failure, or worse symptoms from excess calcium.  Internal Medicine and Surgery at MedVet Indianapolis agree that surgery is recommended. Internal Medicine gives Luke and the primary hyperparathyroidism a good prognosis with surgery. His surgery is currently scheduled for Wednesday September 11, 2024, but if funds can't be raised we may have to push the date out. Luke lives with his fur sister Stella. She is also a deaf pittie mix adopted from the same shelter about a yr before Luke. They look very similar. Luke is the ornery one of the 2 and is incredibly smart and stubborn. The trainer taught him sign language which he “listens” to when he wants to and ignores when he doesn’t. Luke is very vocal, cuddle bug and lap dog between the 2. PB and banana Three Dog Bakery treats are his absolute favorite. They both have so much personality and bring so much joy to their Mom. Please help us keep Luke with his family. His mom has been working hard to come up with money for his surgery and had raised $2200.00 of it.
