People Over Profit NYC (POPNYC)&nbsp;is a grassroots nonprofit fighting for healthcare reform, human rights, and social justice. The U.S. leads the world in medical bankruptcies. Americans carry at least $220 billion in medical debt. Each year, 68,000 people die, and countless more become permanently disabled due to their inability to access treatment. 27 million Americans remain uninsured, and those who do have health insurance face rising premiums, treatments limited to in-network providers, and delayed and denied claims. Insurers use a variety of profit-maximizing tactics you may have heard of: prior authorization, non-medical switching, step therapy, empty &ldquo;ghost&rdquo; networks, and Al algorithms that deny claims by asserting treatment is &ldquo;not medically necessary.&rdquo; Most Americans live one major medical event away from crushing debt. This struggle is so normalized in our society that it&rsquo;s the premise of the award-winning popular television show, &ldquo;Breaking Bad&rdquo; &mdash; a story that simply cannot exist in a country with universal healthcare. And New York can lead it. The New York Health Act (NYHA) would establish comprehensive healthcare coverage for every New Yorker, replacing the bureaucracy of premiums, deductibles, and copays with an efficient, publicly funded system. No networks, no prior authorization. No coverage gaps when you change jobs or lose income. For the majority of New Yorkers, this means paying less. The Act is funded through a progressive payroll and income tax, meaning lower and middle-income residents would pay significantly less than they currently spend on premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Businesses (especially small businesses struggling with the cost of employee health benefits) and local governments would see substantial relief. And the state would gain the bargaining power to negotiate and lower drug prices and administrative costs that currently consume a third of every healthcare dollar. It&rsquo;s a win for everyone! (Except for the predatory for-profit insurance corporations&hellip;) Passing the NYHA wouldn&#39;t just transform healthcare in our state. It would prove the universal healthcare model works, and build the political momentum needed to bring Medicare for All to other states in the fight for universal healthcare&ndash;and beyond, even to the federal level. We also advocate for other legislation, such as the Corporate Crimes Against Healthcare Act (S.3829), which would close the ERISA loophole that currently shields employer-sponsored insurers from legal accountability. In fact, S.3829 would send health insurance executives to prison for 1 - 6 years for actions that result in the death or injury of a patient. Las aseguradoras utilizan una variedad de tácticas para maximizar ganancias que quizás haya escuchado: autorización previa, cambio no médico de medicamentos, terapia escalonada, redes “fantasma” vacías, y algoritmos de IA que niegan reclamos alegando que el tratamiento “no es médicamente necesario”. La mayoría de los estadounidenses viven a un solo evento médico grave de una deuda aplastante. Esta lucha está tan normalizada en nuestra sociedad que es la premisa del galardonado y popular programa de televisión “Breaking Bad” — una historia que simplemente no podría existir en un país con cobertura médica universal. En Estados Unidos, incluso los asegurados, los estadounidenses de clase media, deben ir a la guerra con su aseguradora por el derecho a la cobertura que ya pagaron. <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1779240287/wysiwyg/xqhwpfmwsiwvbmvxujix.jpg" style="cursor:pointer;padding:0px 1px;user-select:none;position:relative;box-sizing:inherit;max-width:100%" /> ¡Hay una mejor manera! Y Nueva York puede liderarla. La Ley de Salud de Nueva York (NYHA, por sus siglas en inglés) establecería cobertura médica integral para cada neoyorquino, reemplazando la burocracia de primas, deducibles y copagos con un sistema eficiente y financiado públicamente. Sin redes, sin autorización previa. Sin interrupciones en la cobertura al cambiar de trabajo o perder ingresos. Para la mayoría de los neoyorquinos, esto significa pagar menos. La Ley se financia mediante un impuesto progresivo sobre la nómina y los ingresos, lo que significa que los residentes de ingresos bajos y medios pagarían considerablemente menos de lo que actualmente gastan en primas y costos de bolsillo. Los negocios (especialmente las pequeñas empresas que luchan con el costo de los beneficios de salud de sus empleados) y los gobiernos locales verían un alivio sustancial. Y el estado ganaría el poder de negociación necesario para reducir el precio de los medicamentos y los costos administrativos que actualmente consumen un tercio de cada dólar destinado a la salud. ¡Es una victoria para todos! (Excepto para las corporaciones de seguros con fines de lucro que se aprovechan del sistema…) Aprobar la NYHA no solo transformaría la atención médica en nuestro estado. Demostraría que el modelo de salud universal funciona, y generaría el impulso político necesario para llevar Medicare para Todos a otros estados en la lucha por la salud universal — y más allá, incluso al nivel federal. También abogamos por otra legislación, como la Ley de Crímenes Corporativos Contra la Atención Médica (S.3829), que cerraría el vacío legal de ERISA que actualmente protege a las aseguradoras patrocinadas por empleadores de rendir cuentas legales. De hecho, la S.3829 enviaría a prisión de 1 a 6 años a los ejecutivos de seguros de salud por acciones que resulten en la muerte o lesión de un paciente. Esto no es solo una tendencia, ni un titular, ni un puñado de historias… la gente está despertando a las duras realidades del sistema de salud roto de Estados Unidos y dándose cuenta de que el sistema DEBE cambiar. Somos todos nosotros contra una industria de billones de dólares con capital casi ilimitado para gastar en cabildeo político — así que debemos usar todos los medios a nuestro alcance para difundir el mensaje e informar a la gente sobre las soluciones legislativas que tenemos disponibles.
