Help Hawaiʻi Families Access Care, Support, and Opportunity Across Hawaiʻi, families work tirelessly to help their children and loved ones receive the healthcare, services, and support they need. Yet too many continue to face long wait times, shortages of pediatric specialists, limited services on neighbor islands, and the challenges of navigating an increasingly complex healthcare system. These barriers can delay care, increase stress on families, and make it more difficult for children, caregivers, and older adults to receive the support they need. Hawaiʻi continues to experience significant healthcare workforce shortages. According to the 2026 Hawaiʻi Physician Workforce Report, the state is short an estimated 833 full-time equivalent physicians when geographic access across the islands is considered. Of Hawaiʻi&#39;s 12,688 licensed physicians, fewer than 3,700 are actively providing patient care. Pediatric subspecialties&mdash;including pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric pulmonology, and pediatric critical care&mdash;remain among the state&#39;s greatest workforce shortages, with rural and neighbor island communities facing some of the greatest barriers to care. Children throughout Hawaiʻi also continue to rely on Medicaid and the Children&#39;s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for healthcare coverage. Nationally, more than 17% of children enrolled in these programs have behavioral health conditions, and nearly 74% receive behavioral health services through Medicaid or CHIP. These programs remain one of the largest sources of healthcare coverage for children with ongoing medical and developmental needs. Recent federal healthcare legislation is projected to reduce Medicaid spending by approximately $911 billion over the next decade. The Congressional Budget Office estimates these changes could result in approximately 10 million more uninsured Americans, increasing concerns about access to healthcare, particularly in rural communities already facing provider shortages. These challenges build upon longstanding healthcare access gaps throughout Hawaiʻi. As demand continues to grow, community partnerships, multidisciplinary collaboration, workforce development, and coordinated support systems are becoming increasingly important. No family should have to navigate these challenges alone.
