Sailing Project Endeavor teaches at-risk youth, ages 16 to 21, on a Catalina 27 slipped at Safe Harbor on the Chula Vista bayfront. We rented that slip because the MTS Blue Line stops at H Street, close to the marina on a map. Parents and stakeholders told us the trolley is not how they want youth getting to the water. Safety came first. Logistics followed. This fund buys a basic passenger van the nonprofit owns, so a known adult can take the crew from home to the dock and home again. The goal is $22,000. That is the cost of winning a basic passenger van at a San Diego County GovDeals auction (a $12,000 bid), paying a premium allowance and California use tax, and putting the van into service: registration, a repair reserve, a year of insurance, lettering, a safety kit, and fuel. It is purposely smaller than a retail purchase, which we estimate near $36,447 on the road. San Diego County offers surplus vehicles to 501(c)(3) community partners before the public auction. If we are given a suitable van, the cash need drops to about $7,777 to insure it, register it, and make it ready for youth. Anything raised beyond the cost of putting the shuttle in service stays restricted to this van: repairs, insurance, fuel, and eventual replacement. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Sailing Project Endeavor is a 501(c)(3) organization, EIN 83-1254190. Zeffy does not take a fee from the gift.
