(Name has been changed to protect the identity of the youth.) There are days when this work makes me proud. And then there are days when it makes me angry. Today, I&rsquo;m angry. I want to tell you about Brian.Brian is a young man with a history in foster care who was adopted and has recently been moved into a supervised &ldquo;independent&rdquo; living home.When we walked into his room, there was barely anything there.A bed.A dresser.And what was called a mattress but was really nothing more than a thin pad, maybe half an inch thick. The floors were filthy.There was no warmth.&nbsp;No comfort.&nbsp;No personality. Nothing that said, &ldquo;This is your home.&rdquo;Brian asked if he could have a refrigerator in his room.We obliged.Then he asked if we could help make his room feel a little more like home.Nothing extravagant.We wanted to give him a desk and chair so he would have somewhere to sit, work and plan for his future. A nightstand beside his bed. A television. An alarm clock. Some lights around the ceiling. A nice rug beside his bed so his feet wouldn&rsquo;t hit a cold, dirty floor every morning.Simple things.Normal things.Things many of us wouldn&#39;t think twice about having in our own bedrooms. But the response we received was essentially: He doesn&rsquo;t need anything.He couldn&#39;t have a television.And somehow, asking for things to make his room comfortable was treated as though he was &ldquo;playing the victim&rdquo; or trying to make himself appear poor.That broke my heart and made me angry.Because look at the room.It doesn&#39;t look like independence. It doesn&#39;t look like stability.It doesn&#39;t look like someone is being prepared to become a successful young adult.It looks institutional.And we are supposed to be okay with that?I&rsquo;m not.This is exactly why I advocate so fiercely for young people who have experienced foster care.We tell them they deserve loving homes.We tell them they deserve stability.We tell them they matter.We tell them that when they reach adulthood, we want them to become independent, productive and successful.But then some of them reach the doorstep of adulthood with no money, no furniture, no safety net, no family they can truly depend on and nowhere to go. And somehow, they are expected to magically figure it all out.Brian deserves better.I am tired of the red tape.I am tired of the excuses.I am tired of phone calls that lead to another phone number, applications that lead to another application, referrals that lead to another referral, and systems that are supposed to help vulnerable young adults but somehow leave them waiting while their lives are happening right now.I don&#39;t want another list of organizations to call.I want solutions.So I am asking our community for help.Homes for Children Corporation is looking for REAL resources and REAL people who are ready to help us create a pathway for Brian to move into a place of her own. We need people who can help with: -Individuals, businesses, landlords and donors willing to invest directly in helping a young woman establish a safe, stable home-Affordable apartment or housing options-Security deposit and first month&rsquo;s rent-Rental assistance-Utility deposits--Employment opportunities-Transportation-Financial literacy and budgeting-Mentorship and independent-living support And please understand something:We are not looking for pity. We are looking for a pathway.Brian does not need someone to feel sorry for him.He needs people willing to stand beside him while he builds the life he deserves. There are thousands of young people who age out of foster care or transition from unstable situations and are told, &ldquo;You&#39;re an adult now.&rdquo;But independence isn&#39;t just turning 18.Independence requires opportunity.It requires resources.It requires someone teaching you what you were never taught.And sometimes, it requires somebody being willing to say:&ldquo;You are not staying here forever. We are going to help you build something better.&rdquo;That is what I am saying today.Brian, I will find you a way out.I don&#39;t know exactly what that pathway will look like yet. But I know this:A bed in a room is not the same thing as a home.You deserve a place where you can put a rug on the floor.Hang your lights.Sit at your desk.Watch your television.Stock your refrigerator.Close your door.Exhale.And finally say:&ldquo;This is mine.
