The text "Buffalo Mom Village" is centered over a city skyline silhouette and water, framed by stylized leaves and soft-colored organic shapes.

Two years ago, I was an isolated new mother with a baby, and I was looking for something I desperately needed: community. I spent a lot of time at libraries, children’s classes, parks, and other places where mothers and young children gathered, but I wasn't finding the kind of connection and support I was looking for. I wanted to create a place where mothers could meet other mothers, children could build friendships, and everyone could feel genuinely welcome. So I put an invitation out on social media for mothers I didn't even know to join me for a weekly Friday morning walk. I wasn't trying to start an organization. I simply wanted to get outside with my baby, meet other mothers, and feel a little less alone. Those walks grew, and when winter came, we began gathering indoors at community spaces instead. As we kept meeting, I began to see just how much more families were looking for: connection, a welcoming community, affordable opportunities for children to learn and explore, and support and resources for the challenges of raising a family. What started as a few moms walking together began to grow into something much bigger. That little group of moms became Buffalo Mom Village. Today, Buffalo Mom Village is a functioning 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization serving families throughout Buffalo. Each month, we welcome approximately a dozen new families in addition to the families who are already part of our community. We currently offer affordable classes, enrichment activities, play opportunities, family meetups and walks, and support services for mothers and young children. Some of our activities are free, while others have intentionally low fees, and cost is never meant to be a barrier—families who cannot afford a program fee can participate at a reduced cost or for free. In addition to our regular programming and community-building work, Buffalo Mom Village also takes on charitable efforts through our volunteer Outreach Team. The team is made up of mothers from within the Buffalo Mom Village community who come together to support families in need and take on community projects. We are also developing our Mom Closet as part of this outreach work—an occasional, dignified opportunity for mothers in need to access clothing and other children's necessities for their families. But Buffalo Mom Village has always been about more than activities. It is about the village. Motherhood can be incredibly isolating. Families need places where they can meet people, build friendships, find support, let their children play, and simply feel like they belong. And not every family feels comfortable or welcome in traditional children's programs. Some families face financial barriers. Some have children with different needs or behaviors. Some are navigating difficult circumstances. Some simply haven't found their people yet. I want Buffalo Mom Village to be the place where families can come exactly as they are. This isn't about creating another children's business or activity center. It's about creating something where a mom can walk through the door with her children whether she has $5 that day or $0, whether her child is perfectly behaved or needs extra support, whether she's a stay-at-home mom or working, whether she has a partner or is parenting solo, whether she's new to Buffalo or has lived here her whole life—and feel like this place is for us. For the past two years, I have built Buffalo Mom Village without external funding, doing it all myself and moving between temporary locations as we've grown. Now, we have an opportunity to take the next step. We are now working toward establishing a permanent home within an existing community space in Buffalo. This approach allows us to keep our overhead manageable rather than taking on the significantly higher cost of a traditional storefront or commercial space, while also creating opportunities to work alongside other community organizations already doing meaningful work for local families. We currently have several promising possibilities in front of us and are working to find the right fit. A dedicated home would change what Buffalo Mom Village is able to offer. It would mean families could count on having somewhere to go—not just for a scheduled class, but for community, connection, play, enrichment, and support throughout the year. It would give us room to expand our programming, provide additional opportunities for mothers to support one another, and build the kind of community space that simply isn't possible when you're constantly packing everything up and moving from place to place. And perhaps most importantly, it would give Buffalo Mom Village a home. I have spent the last two years building this organization because I believe mothers and children deserve more opportunities to connect with their community, regardless of their circumstances. Now I'm asking our community to help us build the next chapter. Whether you are a mom who has found a welcoming community within Buffalo Mom Village, a parent or grandparent who believes in creating stronger communities for children, a local business, a friend, neighbor, family member, or simply someone who believes families deserve places where they can belong—we would be grateful to have you in our village. Every contribution brings us closer to opening the doors! We also welcome community partnerships, in-kind donations of equipment or supplies, raffle items, sponsorships, and connections to grant opportunities, businesses, organizations, or individuals who may want to support this work.
