A tricolor dog with large ears lies on blue absorbent pads inside a car.

This sweet boy arrived in our care after a concerned member of the community called about an injured dog who had wandered onto their property. When he was found, he was holding his back right leg completely off the ground. He was clearly in pain, but we didn’t yet know the extent of his injuries. Our medical team transported him for X-rays. The results were heartbreaking: he has a broken hip and a broken femur. His injuries weren’t the only evidence that he has had a difficult time. He arrived with several rocks embedded around his hind end, tar stuck to his back, and significant pain when touched. We don’t know exactly what happened to him or how long he had been suffering, but we do know that he deserves better. Thankfully, our veterinarians believe that his hip may be able to heal with strict rest and time. Unfortunately, his femur fracture will require surgical intervention. The recommended procedure is an FHO (femoral head ostectomy). Put simply, the surgeon removes the broken and damaged portion of the thigh bone where it connects to the hip. Once that damaged bone is removed, the body develops a new “false joint” made of muscle and scar tissue. This allows the dog to regain use of the leg while eliminating the painful bone-on-bone contact caused by the fracture. The cost of his surgery and related medical care is estimated to come to at least around $3,000.  For an animal who has already been through so much, this surgery could be the difference between living with chronic pain and having the opportunity to heal and move forward. We are asking for you help to give this little guy that chance. Every donation, no matter the amount, brings him one step closer to recovery. And if you aren’t able to donate, sharing this fundraiser can make an enormous difference. We can’t change what happened to him before he found his way to us. But we can make sure that from this point forward, he knows what it feels like to be safe, cared for, and loved ❤️
