NAEDA is honored to partner with Oakland Queer Dance Studio as they prepare dancers for the Gay Games this June. Below is their story, in their own words, and how our community can help support their journey: We are Oakland Queer Dance Studio, and this is our Ballroom Training class preparing to go to the Gay Games in June of this year. Some of us are definitely going to compete, and a few of us are coming along for the ride month to month but are unable to commit to going all the way because dancing and traveling are expensive. Most of our students had never tried ballroom dance before. We recruited them from the LGBTQ Country Western social dance community where we have been teaching social dance. They are quickly learning that ballroom dance requires more commitment, practice, and investment of time and money. Our class consists of a variety of individuals, some of whom are still in school and many who are at different stages of their careers. We offer our students two rates, regular and discounted, in order to make classes possible for more people. We work hard to secure practice space and resources at a price that everyone can afford. However, we could really use financial support to help some individuals cover expenses that we have little control over, such as airfare, lodging, and performance attire. Financial aid could mean the difference between folks retiring in April after our local showcase, The April Affair Mock Competition, and going all the way to Spain to try to win a medal in June. We are asking for help raising $3,200 to offset travel and participation costs for dancers with financial need. It would be so rewarding for us to see more students able to take the leap and work hard toward the dream of dancing at the Games. We plan to fundraise for them as a group and then divide the money equitably among those who need it. We are excited to partner with NAEDA in that endeavor.﻿We are Citabria and Nancy. Citabria teaches classes at Oakland Queer Dance Studio, and Nancy works with Citabria on all the admin and logistics to give our community the wonderful dance learning experience they deserve.
