We scan film, digitize videotape and photographs, and catalog every piece in a comprehensive database, so this history can be found, researched and shared, not just stored.How it startedIn 2014, filmmaker Sonny Miller passed away unexpectedly. Derek Hoffmann, who filmed alongside Sonny on The Search series, stepped in to protect his archive. That archive became the start of the Nalu Vault, and today we're working to preserve as many surf and action sports archives as we can.Why it can't waitFilm turns to vinegar. Videotape sheds its coating. Slides and prints fade. Every year a collection sits in a garage or closet, more of it is lost for good.What we doAt our Mission Viejo facility, archivist Richard Cheski scans film reels, digitizes aging videotape and preserves delicate photographs. Everything is kept in climate-controlled storage with secure digital backups, and all work is done in-house.Then we catalog it.
