🌟 Help Restore the Whittier Birthplace Barn! 🌟 The Whittier Birthplace is hosting a barn-raiser to repair and restore the historic barn on our property for expanded use as a gathering place for the Greater Haverhill community. We envision school field trip activities, art shows, musical and theatrical performances taking place inside the renovated barn.&nbsp; The Trustees of the John Greenleaf Whittier Homestead (d.b.a. Whittier Birthplace) was organized in April 1893 to preserve the historic landscape, house, and other buildings as nearly as may be, in the same condition as when John Greenleaf Whittier lived on the farmstead and to provide public access to the property so that the legacy of Whittier&rsquo;s literary and abolition works may be remembered. The original barn, built in 1821 by John and Moses Whittier (the poet&rsquo;s father and uncle) tragically burned in 1970. &nbsp;However, after a region-wide search for a barn of a similar age and in the same Dutch-style, a gift was made from a farm right here in Haverhill. The present barn was donated by the Davidowicz family of Crescent Farm and moved across town in pieces from its Bradford location in 1971. The tags marking each of the beams within the barn are still visible today. This 19th Century barn now requires significant repairs to clapboards, windows, doors, roof, lighting, stairs and railings, as well as complete exterior painting. Estimates indicate that this project will cost in excess of $75,000. We are seeking partners from the community to support this project and to help us to further the legacy of Haverhill&rsquo;s great poet and abolitionist, John Greenleaf Whittier. These repairs will enable the Whittier Birthplace to expand the use of this historic structure for the benefit of the Greater Haverhill community.
