Born and raised in Richmond, Michael was the son of a Cherokee father and a mother who taught music. Throughout his life, he remained deeply committed to Native sovereignty, civil and human rights, sobriety, community peace, and preserving stories that might otherwise have been forgotten. Michael did not simply document Richmond&rsquo;s history&mdash;he helped make it. He was a familiar presence at community gatherings, neighborhood events, marches, public meetings, churches, celebrations, and moments of loss. Whether he was writing an article, photographing an important occasion, speaking before a crowd, or sharing a story with a friend, Michael brought passion, purpose, and his unmistakable spirit. While Michael touched countless lives through his advocacy and community work, his most important roles were those he held within his family. He was a loving husband and father whose life, presence, and stories will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved him most. His family was an essential part of his story and the legacy he leaves behind. Michael&rsquo;s advocacy extended far beyond Richmond. He served as chairperson of the United Urban Warrior Society of Central California and organized and documented Native sobriety efforts. He spoke and wrote about historical trauma, healing, mental health, self-worth, and the importance of preserving Native culture and history. His work helped ensure that Native voices, experiences, and contributions were seen, heard, and remembered. Michael had a remarkable ability to make people feel that their lives and stories mattered. He wrote life into so many stories. Now, we invite the community to help honor his. We are raising $30,000 to assist with Michael&rsquo;s cremation, a memorial service celebrating his extraordinary life, and support for the family he leaves behind. Richmond Police Activities League will serve as the recipient and fiscal agent for all donations. A memorial service is being planned for October 2026.
