The Wounds to Wisdom Domestic Violence Support Group Initiative is a free, trauma-informed, clinical intern-led program that provides survivors of domestic violence with safe, supportive spaces to heal and rebuild their lives. Offered in women&#39;s shelters and community centers throughout the Greater Houston area, the initiative combines peer support, psychoeducation, mindfulness, and creative activities: including journaling, vision boards, and expressive art projects, to help participants process trauma, strengthen healthy coping skills, reduce isolation, and foster resilience. HREC4DV itself began in 2019 as a small peer support group of survivors who came together with a shared desire to help others experiencing domestic violence. What started as a grassroots effort has evolved into a unique, inclusive, and evidence-informed support group model facilitated by trained clinical interns under professional guidance. Through repeated participation, many survivors report meaningful improvements in emotional wellness, self-confidence, stress management, and their ability to establish healthier relationships and life goals. Beyond the shelter setting, HREC4DV provides a continuum of care as participants transition back into the community. Survivors receive referrals and assistance with benefits applications, legal resources, food assistance, furniture and household essentials, and other supportive services that promote stability. They are also encouraged to continue participating in community-based support groups, educational workshops, and skills-building opportunities designed to foster long-term independence, empowerment, and self-sufficiency.
