María lives with her husband and daughter. She is a full-time caregiver for her 35-year-old daughter, who has a severe intellectual disability. The family lives in a humble house built on the side of one of Hormigueros' characteristic hills. The house is raised on columns made of a mixture of materials: cement, treated wood, and tree branches to support the family home. The walls are beginning to show signs of termite damage, and during Hurricane Ernesto, a tree fell on the house, causing part of the roof to collapse, which has accelerated the damage to the house as a whole.  Since Hurricane Maria (2017), María and her family continue to seek resources to improve their living conditions. In January 2025, the municipality of Hormigueros presented the project to PRoTechos. After a site-inspection, PRoTechos identified the materials and equipment necessary to undertake this project and help this family in need.  Our goal is to raise $6,000 that will pay for materials to complete the reconstruction of MARIA and HER FAMILY's home with a safe roof and foundation.  PRoTechos addresses this crisis with a unique and effective approach: we rebuild roofs in the most vulnerable communities while providing carpentry training. Through our learning program, apprentices learn to build resilient roofs as part of a hands-on, supervised course where they work on roofs in these underserved communities.  They graduate from the program with much needed carpentry skills, moving on to work in a related field and reducing Puerto Rico's carpentry shortage.  Communities have responded to our work. PRoTechos constantly receives requests to repair roofs from communities and partners all over Puerto Rico. Homeowners are forever appreciative of the dedication and heart our teams put into repairing their homes.  Our trainees are grateful for the new skills and job opportunities. However, without your help, our work cannot continue.
