C-IMPACT, a Maryland 501c(3), leads the Growing Ready Employees through Applied Training (GREAT) program designed to prepare students ages 18-21 with developmental differences like autism and intellectual disabilities to be hired into competitive, full-pay employment when they graduate. Just like our friend Olivia in the picture, who is now working as a child care assistant teacher! We are seeking donations to offset the costs of providing transportation to and from the job sites for up to 16 students. We really appreciate your considered support - it's what makes you GREAT too!  We currently work with Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS), and are about to expand to Baltimore City, to support students through individualized work-based learning experiences and provided direct job coaching support. Assigning a full-time coach upfront until the student learns the skills of the job, understands how to navigate all the social situations, and can demonstrate they successfully perform these things consistently and independently has allowed us tremendous success with these young adults. Over the two years of this program, we have had 6 students out of 21 receive full-pay employment opportunities, with seven more anticipated. That is enormous, given the fact that historically, students who receive special education services in high school only have a 20% employment rate post-graduation. And for many of these individuals who are employed, they are five times more likely to be underemployed or paid below minimum wage. GREAT has proven that with the proper upfront training support, many of these young people can be fully contributing members of the workforce worthy of equal investments as their colleagues. The ongoing challenge for many has been access to their job sites. Transportation remains a barrier for most of the students in the GREAT program, and a reason why most high school students do not receive the type of job training we have offered. Through the grant that funds GREAT, we were able to provide taxis for a select number of students to and from their job training sites. We anticipated more students being able to access allowed government vouchers for transportation services, but many of those have been reduced based on recent funding cuts and other administrative actions. As a result, our grant has absorbed more transportation costs than we expected to allow more students to access the job training offered through GREAT. Use of public transportation is equally limited, with the MTA Mobility service having an on-time rate of 19% for our students. We have met with government officials to try and address this and have been told they are aware of the problem but there is not much that can be done right now.  Now, as we are approaching the end of this grant term, we are running short of funding to continue the program for all students until the end of this school year. We are applying for new funding effective July 1, but in the interim, we are trying to raise $10K to ensure the current students can continue without disruption.  All donations to C-IMPACT are tax deductible.
