Joseph Thompson is a 55-year-old Capetonian whose life has been marked by resilience and quiet strength. Wheelchair-bound and currently sleeping at a bus stop in Green Point, Joseph faced a hit-and-run accident that broke his arm. A visit to the hospital led to him losing his spot at the local homeless shelter, and since then, he has been surviving on the streets. Yet, through all of this, Joseph never lost his spirit. He greets each day with a smile, never asking for help, but always radiating a quiet kindness that makes you want to give back. When I spoke with Joseph, I asked him what he needed most. His response? A simple pair of pants, as his were threadbare and no longer offered any warmth. His request, though modest, reflected his dignity and his deep sense of self.  But what struck me the most about Joseph was his dream, his lifelong aspiration to become an artist. As a boy and young man, he spent hours painting, using his art to express the beauty and complexity of life. Even now, despite everything, he holds on to that dream. By supporting Joseph, we’re not just giving him a pair of pants, a warm blanket, or meals; we’re giving him something far greater: the encouragement to believe that his dreams still matter, even in the hardest times. Together, we can help provide Joseph with the tools he needs to keep going, both physically and emotionally.
