Takoma Park Lunch and Learn is a free academic and fun summer day camp for underserved Takoma Park children in grades one through 12. Its unique model not only produces remarkable academic gains but also cultivates leadership by empowering older students to guide and mentor younger campers. The camp takes place in a Takoma Park school. The students are referred by their teachers with the goal to advance their classroom skills over the summer. Skilled educators teach reading, writing and math and help students think critically as well as act with consideration for other people. We also teach swimming, sports and arts &amp; crafts. Parents are able to go to their jobs without worrying that their children will be home alone, unsupervised.&nbsp; We test their academic level at the start of and the end of each session to assess their progress. This past summer&rsquo;s camp resulted in improvements in reading and math between 20 and 100%. Lunch and Learn appreciates that as our children grow they need their opportunities for responsibility to expand with them. This year 13 high school students participated in our volunteer program where they lead elementary and middle school lessons. We pride ourselves on our model of progression. The long-term value of our program is exhibited through many of our students returning as part of our teaching teams when they are adults.&nbsp;&nbsp; The late Jackie Frazier was the original executive director. Lunch and Learn grew from 30 students the first year, to an annual enrollment with 100-165 children. Over 1,000 students have gone through the program since 2013. Carrying on for Jackie are Doris Duarte, Lunch and Learn&rsquo;s dedicated Assistant Director who puts in long hours behind the scenes, and Shana Fulcher, who became the Executive Director in 2025. Shana has been working creatively with young people for many years as PTA President, leader of two Girl Scout troops, Girl Scout Service Unit Leader, and Director of Girl Scouts&rsquo; Camp Tuckerman. Experienced local activists who believe in these children and the program serve on the board.&nbsp; Takoma Park Lunch and Learn is a rare program that provides academic support with enriching recreational activities, all completely free for local underserved children. Lunch and Learn is one of a kind in its connection to community builders. Community organizers are our founders, they serve on our board, and work as our directors. You can feel those skills and values permeating everything we do as a camp.&nbsp; We have in past years received major support from the City of Takoma Park, Montgomery County, local foundations, and individual donors. Raising enough money to run with the goal of advancing the program to reach more children is always a priority. With your help we hope to make Lunch and Learn more sustainable and more impactful.
