Long before she became a housing advocate, social justice leader, and fierce champion for the LGBTQ+ community, Laurie was the big sister who stood up for her younger brother. That spirit never left her. As an adult, Laurie dedicated her career to helping people living with HIV/AIDS, advocating for stable housing, and protecting some of the most marginalized members of her community. After moving to Boise, she continued that work through the Boise City/Ada County Housing Authority, where she served low-income families, seniors, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Laurie was a person who believed that when someone needed help, you showed up. She passed away from lymphoma on July 15, 2015, surrounded by her son Sidney, her family, and close friends. Now, more than a decade later, her story is helping bring our community together once again. Why This Fireworks Show MattersFor Jon, Boise Pride's fireworks carry a deeply personal meaning. The fireworks will take place on September 19, Jon's birthday. It is impossible for him to separate that celebration from the sister who helped shape his life. Jon remembers Laurie as someone who never sat silently in the face of injustice. As children, she stood up for him when he was being bullied. She once chained herself to a tree to protest the destruction of trees beside their elementary school. As an adult, she devoted her career to housing, healthcare, social justice, and LGBTQ+ advocacy. And when Jon realized he was gay at 35, he experienced the clarity and freedom that comes from finally being able to live authentically. That experience reinforced something Laurie had spent her life fighting for: Everyone deserves to feel safe, visible, valued, and free to be themselves. Having Boise Pride's fireworks fall on his birthday makes this year's celebration especially emotional. As Jon puts it, Laurie is no longer here to blow out his birthday candle with him. But her caring spirit moves forward every time we choose to uplift one another. A $10,000 Challenge to Our CommunityJon has already stepped forward with a $10,000 gift in Laurie's memory. Now he's asking the rest of us to step forward, too. At a time when some corporations are hesitating to support Pride, Jon's gift is a challenge to everyday people: when our community needs us, we can show up for one another.
