Mirka “Yiaya” Kakis always made life more musical. Born in 1930, she built a brave and beautiful life, marrying Jack Kakis in 1947, immigrating to the United States in 1951, and carrying forward an irrepressible zest for life and artistic expression. She passed on November 22, 2025, the Orthodox feast day of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music. Yiaya sang from childhood with true artistry and an unforgettable presence. Without access to formal musical training, she came to value it deeply. For her, singing was both solace and strength. She created beauty in countless ways: through flowers, cooking, and her deep love for children, especially the young singers of Kairos, whom she lovingly invited to call her “Yiaya.”  Over the 35 years history of Kairos, countless singers gathered in her home for sleepovers, received rehearsal treats, and constant encouragement. She revered every child and family. To the Kairos community, she was more than a beloved supporter; she was a true guardian elder.  This scholarship fund is dedicated to her ongoing legacy of joy through song, founded in her firm belief that all children should have access to musical education. With love and gratitude, as her song continues in the voices she so deeply cherished. Together through our songs, we unite in a spirit of joy for the years to come, her song resounding and always with us.
