The SS Beaver was the first steamship to travel Puget Sound, arriving in 1836. Owned by the Hudson&#39;s Bay Company and commanded by Captain William McNeill, this sturdy side-wheeler served as a &ldquo;floating trading post,&rdquo; carrying passengers, cargo, and supplies throughout Puget Sound and along the Inside Passage to Russian settlements in Alaska. This new exhibit will highlight the SS Beaver&rsquo;s important connection to Fort Nisqually, where the vessel played a key role during a pivotal period in our region&rsquo;s history. The exhibit will also reveal the Beaver&rsquo;s lesser-known later involvement in regional wars and disputes. Through newly uncovered research by historian Jeremy Holm, visitors will discover how this remarkable vessel helped shape the history and development of our region.&nbsp; Your support&nbsp;will help fund an expanded exhibit featuring a replica of the SS&nbsp;Beaver, artifact displays, a custom display case, graphics and media elements, and specialized lighting to bring this story to life.
