Support Pepper&#39;s critical need for veterinary care. At Serenity Now Animal Sanctuary, poor Pepper has been struggling with laminitis for almost six weeks. &nbsp;Veterinary care to assess and treat the condition has cost almost $1800.00 so far and unfortunately that will probably double as her care needs continue. Laminitis is a painful condition in horses where the tissue inside the hoof becomes inflamed and weakened, sometimes causing the coffin bone to rotate or sink. &nbsp;It is often caused by the sugars in the lush grass that grows in the spring. &nbsp;Pepper experienced an acute laminitis episode in 2024 that she recovered from. &nbsp;We adjusted her diet and access to grass and she did well for two years, but unfortunately it came back with a vengeance this May. &nbsp;We again adjusted her diet and access to grass and she is now kept off grass completely. &nbsp;Pepper can be her own worst enemy, however, and she has occasionally broken through gates to reach the grass she yearns for, which sets her recovery back significantly. &nbsp;She also refuses to eat her food if it contains medication she doesn&#39;t like and swings her head violently to avoid being given medication orally, so it is difficult to manage her pain. &nbsp; Serenity Now Animal Sanctuary&nbsp;is dedicated to providing a safe and loving home to the animals in its care. &nbsp;We are a small nonprofit that is financed primarily by the Sanctuary founder, Teri McClure, who works as a school counselor in Tumwater, Washington. &nbsp;Unexpected veterinary expenses such as Pepper&#39;s have a large impact on the sanctuary&#39;s budget, so donations of any amount are helpful. &nbsp;We are a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax deductible.
