It was framed and mounted, and at first glance it appeared to be a reproduction. When we recently removed it from its frame for closer inspection, we discovered something unexpected. This is not a poster. It is a one-of-a-kind original drawing. Signed simply &ldquo;Richard&rdquo; and dated January 25, 1982, Moon of Mardi Gras is rendered in graphite, ink, and watercolor on drafting vellum. The work captures a layered interior scene at JR&rsquo;s during a formative period of Oak Lawn nightlife &mdash; a rare contemporaneous visual record of Dallas LGBTQ community life just before the AIDS crisis reshaped a generation. It was mounted decades ago with an acidic backing and masking-tape hinges. Over time, those materials have caused brittleness, foxing, and chemical migration into the sheet.
