The unprecedented July 2023 flood left extensive damage throughout the church campus. The thrift store was destroyed, walls had to be removed because of mold, and trailer loads of debris were cleared from the property. The rectory flooded, and emergency mitigation work was necessary to prevent further damage. While FEMA has helped fund emergency repairs, much of the long-term restoration still depends on community support. Built in 1847, the Church of the Holy Innocents is more than a place of worship, it's a historic landmark that has served the Highlands community for 180 years. The flood damaged historically significant architectural features, including copper gutters, stonework, and portions of the church tower. Restoration will preserve these elements while protecting the church from future deterioration. Holy Innocents serves as a food pantry, thrift store, polling place, community garden, gathering space, and support center for those in need. The church has hosted Scouts, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, community events, and outreach programs, while also serving West Point cadets and military families. Restoring the church means preserving these vital community services for years to come. Restoration Projects:Restoration Projects Not Covered by FEMA:Church Roof Restoration — $325,000Campus Security System — $10,000Rectory Roof Restoration — $75,000Restoration of 20 Original Windows — $500-$1000 per windowElectrical System Updates — $150,000Replacement Appliances (Electric Stove, Refrigerator, Washer/Dryer) — $15,000Bathroom Updates (3 Toilets, 2 Bathtubs, Tile Floors) — $25,000Second-Floor Flooring Restoration — $8,000Screen Doors — $1000.00Side and Front Yard Pathway Restoration — $4,000Donation Impact Examples:$25 — Helps preserve a place where neighbors gather, worship, volunteer, and support one another.$50 — Helps restore spaces used for worship, outreach, and community programs.$100 — Helps protect this historic landmark from future storms.$250 — Helps restore a church that has served the Highlands community for over 180 years.$500 — Supports restoration for future generations $1,000 — Makes a lasting investment in preserving one of the town of Highlands' most treasured landmarks.FAQ:Why is the Church of the Holy Innocents raising funds? In July 2023, a 1,000-year storm caused extensive damage to the Town of Highlands and the Church of the Holy Innocents.
