Salaam Community Wellness Center provides a unique, innovative integrative model of healthcare and social services to underserved communities on the South Side of Chicago. READ BELOW FOR DETAILS ON HOW WE ARE SERVING THE COMMUNITY AND WHAT WE WILL  CONTINUE TO DO WITH YOUR GENEROUS DONATION.WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO  Salaam Community Wellness Center was established in 2020 in response to the devastating effects that the COVID-19 pandemic had on Black and Brown communities on Chicago’s South Side. At one time early in the pandemic, the South Side of Chicago had the most infections and deaths from COVID-19 in the entire state of Illinois. Many low-income members of these communities were at highest risk for these devastating outcomes due to the lack of adequate culturally-responsive healthcare to address chronic diseases and underlying conditions. The health center's model was specifically designed to address this disparity by creating an integrative model of care that combines the best of western and non-western medicine. This includes culturally-responsive primary care services along with modalities such as meditation, deep-breathing, yoga, acupuncture, massage therapy, Reiki, music therapy and more. The focus is to prevent and treat acute and chronic illnesses and diseases including addictions, mental health and nutrition.The health center established a collaboration with a mental health organization which provides on-site mental health therapy sessions for black males on a twice monthly basis.  With generous donations, the mental health programs will be expanded to provide individual and family counseling and substance use disorder treatment such as auricular (ear) acupuncture.Another critical area that Salaam Community Wellness Center’s focuses on is nutrition. This is the bedrock for addressing all aspects of health and wellness from chronic diseases to workforce readiness. In 2021, the health center transformed two formerly vacant lots into the “Paradise Garden” urban farm. This has become a much needed initiative that has helped to confront the “food desert” challenge facing many of the community residents. Since its inception, the garden has produced over 40 different varieties of produce. Most of this produce has been distributed free of charge to community members. This is especially important in an area which lacks alternatives to ultra-processed and fast-foods. The health center is partnering with another organization to provide an organic gardening program including hydroponics. Its goal is to both teach individuals how to grow their own food as well as help to create entrepreneurial opportunities. Salaam Community Wellness Center recognized the need to address the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). In addition to having access to affordable healthy foods, this includes decent and affordable housing, quality education, and employment among others. Lack of adequate focus on such issues is recognized as a critical barrier to good healthcare and optimal health outcomes.  The health center has developed a number of programs and partnerships that concentrate on some of the most important SDoH. Understanding that many residents have limited transportation options and concern about public transportation safety, Salaam Community Wellness Center designed several programs that brought some of these resources into the community. The “Peace of Mind” Health & Wellness Expo partnered with a number of health and social service agencies to provide one-stop-shop resources to community members. Attendees also received essential personal care and household items oftentimes not covered by public assistance programs. Over the past year, the health center conducted ongoing drives distributing food, new and gently used clothing, houseware items and blankets to the most vulnerable residents.Through a partnership with a workforce readiness program, Salaam Community Wellness Center began co-sponsoring a drone photography class in January 2024. Adult students are being trained on the mechanics of drone operation and how to prepare to become certified as drone operators. Salaam community Wellness Center needs your help to continue to survive and thrive.
