Dylan Head, is 28 years old and medically retired from the US Army, where he served as a Combat Engineer. Dylan was an outstanding soldier and had every plan of serving his country for 20 or more years. He qualified as an expert on every weapon system, was the top of his company in physical fitness, and was getting ready to attend multiple military schools to be even more of an asset to those he served with. All of that was ripped away from him in an instant when the Doctor came in and said, “We found a brain tumor and we are getting you ready for transfer to Neuro ICU.” In March of 2022 Dylan started to have double vision after going for a jog. I took him to an urgent appointment with the military optometrist. At the time the Doctor said he just needed glasses. It took a week for the glasses to come in and when we got them, the double vision continued. Dylan began experiencing chronic migraines for two weeks and still had double vision, except now it was affecting close vision as well. He went to a few military doctors who all told him he was fine. They shrugged it off as PTSD. A doctor in the emergency room looked us in the eyes and maintained he didn't have brain bleeds or tumors without ordering any imaging. I would not accept this diagnosis (or the lack thereof) and decided to take him to a civilian optometrist where they found optic disc swelling. That same night, Dylan couldn’t spell the word “smile.” Immediately we went to the civilian emergency room and they found the brain tumor; it was the size of a peach. The tumor was located in his left temporal lobe. He spent 11 days in Neuro ICU and had a craniotomy. They told us he only had a 30% chance of surviving surgery, due to increased risk with no way to cut off the blood supply to the tumor. We were also told if they did not find the tumor when they did Dylan would have died within a week. Amazingly, they were able to remove the entire tumor but that was not the end of his fight. Dylan was diagnosed with Astrocytoma Grade 4, IDH mutation. Translation: Terminal Brain Cancer at the age of 26. To date, Dylan has completed targeted radiation and 12 months of chemotherapy. In the town where we live, they only do <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/standard-of-care#" style="text-decoration-color:initial;user-select:auto;box-sizing:inherit" target="_blank">standard of care</a>. He was subsequently referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center where we have been going ever since. We paid for all travel and lodging out of pocket until we found an organization called HunterSeven Foundation that helps us with these types of expenses and specifically assists veterans and active duty with cancer. We have to travel 12 hours by car as Dylan is unable to fly due to the pressure being too much on his head. All of the trips to treatment, prescriptions, vitamins, supplements, dietary accommodations, co-pays, and equipment to sustain Dylan's day to day living has drained all of the savings we had before Dylan got sick. I am unable to work due to being his 24 hr caregiver. Dylan suffers from short term memory loss, extreme fatigue, heat intolerance, anxiety, muscle spasms, constant chronic pain, PTSD attacks, and light weakness on the left side of his body. His pain has gotten so bad that his quality of life is not dwindling. His pain specialists are trying their best but to no avail. Dylan's life expectancy was originally 12-18 months. He is now going on almost 3 years since he was diagnosed. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when a tumor will grow back. Right now as of January 2025 we are monitoring another lesion in the center of his brain. Dylan and I are waiting for an MRI to determine if it is the start of tumor regrowth or not. There is only one thing on his bucket list and the constant travel has made it impossible for us to budget for. That one thing is to have and drive an older 1990s to 2014 Dodge or Ford manual diesel truck. His favorite thing to do is drive and I want him to be able to experience it before he is unable to. He is still cleared by doctors to drive. My husband has an old soul. Dylan has always loved an older and slower way of life. He also wants to have something to pass on to the family that will always have a piece of him. It breaks my heart that he is fighting through a terminal cancer diagnosis and I haven't been able to make it happen for him, so I am trying my hardest to make this wish come true for him. We are seeking the donation of a driveable 1990-2014 Manual Diesel Ford or Dodge pickup truck or funds to secure such a vehicle. It cannot be a project vehicle as Dylan is unable to work on it  himself. Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference in fulfilling Dylan's final bucket list item.
