American Graveyard tells the story of Cherry Lane Cemetery, a historic African American burial ground on Staten Island that was destroyed in the 1950s and paved over for commercial development — and of the descendants, historians, and artists working to recover the history buried there. This month, the story has come to life beyond the film with Black Cherry Lane: Presence, an art exhibition where painters, quilters, miniaturists, and tintype photographers reimagined Cherry Lane and its community. The exhibition will also host Black Cherry Jam, a night of poetry and spoken word whose performances will become part of the film's ending, bringing the exhibition and documentary together. After years of research and filming, we are now raising the funds needed to complete the documentary for release in 2027, the bicentennial of abolition in New York State. The project was recently featured by CBS News, whose report on Cherry Lane and the exhibition has received more than 205,000 views within just one week. Now we're ready to bring American Graveyard across the finish line.Your tax-deductible contribution will support post-production and the remaining work required to complete the film, including editing, archival materials and licensing, original music, sound mix, color correction, legal and final deliverables. How you can help:

Donate: Every contribution, at any amount, brings American Graveyard closer to completion.

Share: Help us bring this story to a wider audience by sharing the film and this campaign with your friends, colleagues and community.

Follow the story: Stay connected as we complete the film and continue the work of restoring Cherry Lane Cemetery and the people buried there to the historical record.

History may be paved over.
