For undocumented youth who arrived in the U.S. alone or fleeing abuse and neglect, securing legal protection is a race against time. Special Immigrant Juvenile Status offers a life-changing path to safety, but it carries a strict deadline: the day a child turns 21, this door closes permanently. Prior to 2025, immigrant youth could request a fee waiver when applying for status. But under new rules enacted by the Trump administration in 2025, USCIS now refuses to grant fee waivers: forcing a required $250 government fee on indigent children. Missing this fee payment means instant rejection, locking a young person out of legal status and protection. In partnership with legal aid and immigration attorneys, mBOLDen Change is removing this new barrier by covering the required petition fees. Why Now: This is a crisis created by policy. While we fight alongside advocates to challenge these fees in court and push Congress for permanent legislative relief, The Gateway Fund serves as a vital bridge — one we hope is temporary. Your gift will help ensure that no child is locked out of safety while we push for long-term reform. (If litigation or legislative reform restores fee waivers for youth petitions, all remaining funds will automatically redirect to cover non-waivable fees for asylum applications and work permits for immigrant families in need.)
