Our Animal Control Officer rescued four dogs—Eve, her son Chestnut, and two others—who were found chained, severely emaciated, and suffering from advanced heartworm disease.  Despite her condition, Eve began to thrive once in our care. As she gained weight and strength, we scheduled her for a spay appointment. It was during this visit that our vet discovered a heart murmur—likely the result of long-term damage from untreated heartworm disease. We started her on doxycycline and kept her on heartworm prevention, doing everything we could within the limits of our facility.  Eve quickly became a shelter favorite. True to her German Shepherd roots, she was smart, protective, a bit mouthy, and deeply affectionate. She would quietly sneak up behind you and nudge for attention, tiptoeing around with an almost cat-like grace. She adored squeaky toys, loved watching birds, and would hold her food bowl at feeding time, patiently waiting her turn. Slowly but surely, she was healing—physically and emotionally.  But time was not on our side.  On the morning of April 15, 2025, Eve tragically passed away from a blood clot caused by heartworms. We are heartbroken. While we gave her love, care, and safety in her final months, the reality is that we couldn’t provide the intensive heartworm treatment she so desperately needed. Our Shelter doesn't currently have the space or quiet environment required to safely treat heartworm-positive dogs.  Why This Matters  Heartworm disease is a severe and potentially fatal condition caused by parasitic worms transmitted through mosquito bites. Once inside a dog’s system, heartworms can grow up to a foot long and lodge in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, leading to heart failure and organ damage. Treatment involves a multi-month regimen, including injections that require dogs to remain calm and quiet for weeks—something our shelter environment cannot currently support.  Here’s the reality at MCAS:  Over 80% of the dogs we intake—more than 800 annually—are heartworm-positive.  We have only three foster homes able to take on the three-month commitment for treatment.  At most, we can treat 12 dogs per year through foster care.  Cost of treatment per dog: Approximately $300.  We’ve reached out to breed-specific rescues and partners up and down the coast, but foster homes are limited, and resources are stretched thin everywhere.  A Solution: The Heartworm Recovery Haven  We are seeking to raise funds to purchase and convert a tiny home-style building into a quiet, climate-controlled recovery space dedicated to heartworm-positive dogs undergoing treatment. This would give us the capacity to:  Begin lifesaving treatment immediately on-site.  Provide a calm, low-stress environment essential for safe recovery.  Increase the number of dogs we can treat each year.  Save dogs like Eve before it’s too late.  Eve’s life mattered. Her story is a painful reminder of what we’re up against, but also of what we can do—with your help.  Please consider donating toward constructing our Heartworm Recovery Haven named “Eves Home” in honor of eve.
