Healthy soil is way more than compost because not all compost is the right compost. Elaine Ingram, in her world renown Soil Food Web School, has spent decades understanding what it takes to make soil healthy in the specific Location in which it exists. Science is suggesting that soil holds 2/3 of all the life on the planet. There are four main groups of life that we can see under a microscope, to know just exactly how healthy that soil is for that location. Soil needs paramecium, bacteria, nematodes, and fungi. Compost is usually rich in bacteria and not so rich in fungi. The kinds of bacteria can vary considerably by location. Here in Spokane, we don't have anybody trained in this kind of soil science. Soil Smart-Soil Wise is creating a fund to pay for the training for two people to have careers in soil science and certifications from the Soil Food Web School. Land hydrology is a unique skill, sometimes requiring large machines to move dirt to create the kind of landscape that will hold water. Zach Weiss and his organization, Water Stories, is a world-renowned organization that has done land hydrology all over the world in small projects and at scale. Soil Smart-Soil Wise is creating a scholarship to train someone in Zach Weiss’ techniques, to be certified by Zach Weiss in land hydrology, so that we will have someone here in Spokane with that skill.
